Ramadan is the holy month of the Islamic calendar. Keeping fast in this month is considered the fifth pillar of Islam. We, doctors, try to help patients in understanding the risk and benefits of month-long fasting. We also guide them to complete fasting without getting low or high sugar by adjusting the medicine.
Now as the Ramadan month is over what patients need to know
  1. Start exercise:  In the month of Ramadan, we ask the patient to reduce physical activity as the extra prayers after Iftar causes a lot of exertion.
  2. Diet control: Keep diet appropriate. Ramadan is the month of restriction. Most of the patients with diabetes follow a healthy diet as advised. It is advisable to continue a healthy diet in divided portions.
  3. Quitting smoking: Many smokers quit smoking during Ramadan. Better not to go on that track again.
  4. Check your sugars: In the month of Ramadan your diet, exercise, medicine everything changes. So get your sugars checked and meet your doctor.
  5. Prepare for Next Ramadan: Pre Ramadan sugar control is very important. You have a whole year till next Ramadan. Follow proper doctors advice to keep your diabetes under control. Share your experiences of Ramadan with a doctor to help him more.
